2 THE NELSON LEADER, MAY 12, 2016 YOURPAPER,YOURPLACE THE LEADER SAYS NewZealand Sign Language has many reasons to celebrate this week. It’s the annual awareness week for the language that provides a lifeline for deaf and hearingimpaired people, and it marks 10 years since it became one ofNew Zealand’s official languages, alongside English and Maori. Amongother reasons are dedicated programmes like the one run by the Nelson Hearing Association that teaches primary school children the basics of sign language (see story, page 7) The programme’s enthusiastic tutor Cathy Gutschlag tells of the lovely connections made between pupils and deaf people. Even a few simple greetings and being able to sign theirown name opens an invaluable rapport between children and those in the deaf community. The pupils’ ability to learn and share also spreads sign language through their families. It’s a great initiative that deserves all the support it can get because it fosters such valuable connections and life lessons for all involved. 1 you know... did 1.
