8 THE NELSON LEADER, JANUARY 16, 2014 Home&Garden JANUARY gardening diary Now is the time to start sowing autumn and winter vegetables. Plant chervil, coriander and basil for autumn. Harvest beetroot now; it will go sour if left in the garden. Water and fertilise lawns and spray for grass grubs. Deadhead roses to promote new flowers for autumn. Stake delphiniums and other tall perennials to ensure good flowering results. TASMAN CANVAS ST the shade and shelter specialists 485 H 03 528 4640 8 4 , M TU ,MOTUEKA ASMAN CANVAS 5HIGH ST Prune back native clematis plants to encourage new growth for next spring’s flowers. Deadhead rhododendrons to ensure you have good bud set for next season’s flowers. Trim perennial petunias to encourage fresh new flowers and a better shape. Apply a layer of slug and snail bait to areas of the garden with fleshy foliage plants. Protect plants from caterpillars with derris dust. Lift and divide spring bulbs. Sow seeds of violas, pansies and polyanthus for winter colour. Check irrigation system for leaks and areas that are not working efficiently. Keep your garden well watered to minimise stress to plants. Feed tomatoes at least once a week with liquid fertiliser. Pinch out laterals (side growths) on tall tomato varieties as they grow and ensure they are firmly staked (don’t waste your laterals, plant them: with a bit of care they will grow into new plants). Apply a mulch of compost around vegetable plants to conserve soil moisture. Feed fruit trees for bumper crops later and water well to prevent fruit drop. Spray pip and stone fruit with copper to prevent fungal diseases. Spray citrus with copper to prevent verrucosis and leaf curl. Summer prune peach and nectarine trees as soon as fruiting is complete. Prune roses lightly and water well in preparation for autumn fl owering. Lift spring flowering bulbs once the leaves have died down completely and store in a cool dry place until autumn. Use a deep saucer filled with sand under your pots to allow more infrequent watering while you’re away on holiday.
