The final day was played on Monday in great weather in contrast to the blustery and wet conditions of the preceding few days. The Golf Croquet National Championships is the strongest golf croquet event on the croquet calendar. It attracted players New Zealand-wide, and a pairing from Australia, Jim and Val Saunders. Nelson Hinemoa Club’s Dennis Bulloch was pitted against Mike Crashley in an even match for the first of the best-of-three. At hoop 13, the tie-breaker, Mike had to hit Dennis’ ball away from the hoop but ended up smashing it through the hoop giving Dennis the first game, 7-6. Dennis was dominant in the second game and won 7-4. He then went on to play against Duncan Dixon who had just won two games against John Christie. Duncan has won the title five National croquet champs a big hit T By MARION PRENTICE he Croquet NZ National Golf Croquet Tournament was held in Nelson and Looking for a Job? www.mycareernelson.co.nz Watchful: Dennis Bulloch, right, of Nelson watches Mike Crashley play a shot at the Golf Croquet New Zealand National Championships at the Nelson Hinemoa Club. times in six years, four of those consecutively. Duncan began strongly, and at hoop five, he drove an angley shot through which continued on, bent (bend it like Beckham) round the peg to then make hoop six in the same shot. It helped that the lawns were in fantastic condition. The game was over in 30 minutes, with Duncan winning 7-2. The second game was almost a repeat of the first, Duncan being the more consistent player, playing in his usual unruffled style, with Dennis having to make some desperate attempts to salvage the game. Duncan won that game 7-2. Annie Henry (Nelson Hinemoa Club) won the Limited Singles event, which was held on the Richmond Croquet Club lawns. The doubles events were also held at Richmond. Local pairings of Ken Hume and Don Neilsen (Nelson Hinemoa) won the 4+ handicap, with Dennis Bulloch and Jace Hobbs (Nelson Hinemoa) won the senior event. Three generations from one family played in the event. Geoff Young (granddad), Dallas Cooke (mother), and Ashley Cooke (daughter).
