But coasters are a hardy bunch and a little thing like rain does not deter them. The group, which started in 2006, now has about 500 people on its mailing list and meets annually. It is holding its next meeting on Sunday at the Suburban Club with special speaker, former Westland District Mayor Durham Havill. Former Greymouth and Cobden residents Joan and Geoff Patterson started the group after shifting from Greymouth in 2001. Geoff was amazed at how many coasters he met in Nelson and thought it would be a good idea to get them all together. They organised an afternoon tea at the Tahunanui Bowling Club. Joan says they were blown away when 150 to 160 people arrived, which was more than double than what they expected. ‘‘It was just bring a plate and a get-together.’’ Joan and Geoff say the group has grown thanks to the support of the Nelson Building Society through excoaster Peter Havill, who have helped with the administrative side. While the group is open to anyone from Karamea to Haast, people over 40 make up the bigger numbers. They say the group has a lot of fun and the good thing about being a coaster is that even if you don’t know the person sitting next to you it does not take long to find a connection or uncover a person having something in common. ‘‘It’s a lot of fun. It’s a happy after- noon,’’ Joan says. Over the years the group has had some great speakers including race commentator Reon Murtha, Grey District Council Mayor Tony Kokshoorn. Another highlight was getting the Kokatahi Band up from Hokitika. The group gets together annually and now met at the Suburban Club. This year Joan and Geoff are step- ping down from running the group, and Shona McLean (ex-Hokitika) and Murray Wieblitz (ex Kokatahi) are taking over the organisation side of things. Shona and Murray arrived in Nel- son a lot earlier than Joan and Geoff and call both the coast and Nelson home. ‘‘I think when you are a coaster, it doesn’t matter how long you have lived off the coast. You still regard it as home,’’ Shona says. ‘‘When you are going down there you are going home,’’ Murray says. ‘‘And when you are coming back to Nelson you are coming home too.’’ The group says that coasters are a resilient bunch who do not like airs and graces. ‘‘I think on the West Coast we don’t like highfalutin in our speech,’’ Doug Stanton says. ‘‘The ones that talk nicely, they are from Canterbury.’’ ❚ Ex-West Coasters and Families are holding their annual get-together at The Suburban Club’s Sports Hall on Sunday, November 17 from 1pm. Entry $6 includes afternoon tea. For more information phone Murray 03 544 6807 or Shona 03 547 6547. Mindfulness in focus The teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh will be brought to Nelson late this month with the visit of Sister Shalom, an ordained Buddhist nun based in the Coromandel. She is offering a free public talk on Mindful Living on Saturday, November 23 from 7pm till 9pm. This will be followed by a Day of Mindfulness on Sunday, November 24 from 9.45am till 3pm , where people can experience the peace and gentleness of a mindfulness practice for themselves. Both events will be at Fairfield House. In her earlier life, Sister Shalom was a therapist and solo mother and is well acquainted with the challenges of daily life. She brings to her teachings all she has learned from her experiences – including cancer, surgery and chemotherapy – as well as her downto-earth approach and infectious joy for life. Sister Shalom says we can use our experiences of suffering and transform them into insight, compassion, and ultimately, a profound freedom. For enquiries and registration for the Day of Mindfulness, phone Libby 03 548 2551.
