22 THE NELSON LEADER, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 NEWS ALISON BLANCHETT SMART BUSINESS CENTRE ACCOUNTANTS ADVERTORIAL Award-winning Nelson architect Richard Sellars of Continuum Architecture Ltd creates "architecture of imagination and creativity, sitting comfortably in its environment". Wife Katie looks after the accounts, and they both rely on Alison Blanchett Smart Business Centre Accountants for their annual accounting checks and in an advisory role. Their accounting partnership started in 2001 when Richard and Katie had just arrived in Nelson. "We [Alison and I] were both starting our own businesses," he recalls. Since then Alison has been on board in a consultancy role. "She's very helpful when we want to know which direction to go, and keeping checks from an accounting point of view. She has a very relaxed approached and we don't feel pressured at all," he adds. Richard gained experience working in large, medium, and small architectural practices in New Zealand and the UK before starting his own in Nelson. Last year the company expanded to become Continuum Architecture. Beautiful simplicity, buildings that reflect serenity and carefully designed interior spaces to accommodate life are qualities inherent in their work. Art is a vital part of the creative process and Richard's skills as an artist underpin all his thinking as a designer. Earlier this year Richard won an architectural competition to design a simple cost-effective house for post-earthquake Canterbury. Dubbed The Cantabrian, his winning design will be built as a show home and later sold to Housing New Zealand. The design will have fast-track consent anywhere in New Zealand. • To contact Continuum Architecture Ltd phone 03 548 6778, 021 205 1150 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Nine teams representing about 50 students from Garin College, Motu- eka High School, Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls spent months constructing pipe-based AquaBots'' out of kits imported from the United States before taking on one another. During the competition, robots completed an underwater obstacle course and raced to salvage diving rings from the bottom of the pool and carry them back to a basket. The students also had to give a presen- tation about their robot. American-born NZAquaBots direc- tor and Garin College physics tea- cher Jay Inman started the pro- gramme after being involved with a US version named Sea Perch. He said the robots were highly customisable, with one Nelson Col- lege for Girls team giving their robot forks for arms. The way different teams placed their robot's motors also enhanced its speed and mobility. Some of them had glitches and some got tangled up with each other while they were doing the course, but we didn't have any catastrophic failures,'' he said. All of the aquabots functioned really well.'' A panel of eight judges from the Cawthron Institute, the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Tech- nology, the New Zealand Navy and others chose Garin College's Team Nautilus'' as the winner. The team will have the option of taking part in Sea Perch's competition in the US next May. Jay said if they were able to afford the trip, Team Nautilus would be the only group from outside the US com- peting. We'll do everything from sausage sizzles to approaching companies and benefactors who might want to see a New Zealand team succeed over in America. It's an America's Cup for underwater robotics.''
