Photo: VIRGINIA WOOLF Central School s cookbook fundraiser Food Central has exceeded expectations raising $60,000 for the school. The book celebrates the Nelson region with photos, recipes and stories. It was an initiative by the school s Community Group. At a school assembly on Tuesday parents involved in the book presented the school with new iPads. Each classroom at the school, including the ESOL room and special needs class, at the school received an iPad. Pupils heard that the fundraiser meant other new equipment for the school including new cameras, chil- dren s gardening equipment and sports equipment could be pur- chased. Principal Paul Potaka said the book as a single new fundraiser was brilliant as the school was used to running stalls and galas. The book s co-ordinator, Lucy Hal- sey, said it was really cool how a book had been transformed into computers. She was very pleased that the book had been so successful. Bilingual teacher Carly Ave said having the iPads was huge. She had helped with the purchase of the iPads and the applications for them. She said the classrooms had also been set up with wireless Internet so teachers would be able to project from the iPads. My kids just think it s magic. Pupil Tom Murray had a family recipe in the book of potato bread and home-made hummus. His family sold a number of books and the feedback from friends and family who saw it was that a really good book with uncomplicated recipes. He thought it was great that the book had gone so well and raised more than $60,000. It s just amazing really. Fellow pupil Tim Douglas, whose mother Sue McNulty owns Brocoli Row, helped out at the photo shoot for the book, making coffees for those involved. He said it was great the book had done well and he had enjoyed eating the left over food at the shoot. Food Central: Stories and Recipes from the Heart of Nelson, $35. Copies of the book are available from the Central School office and selected Nelson bookshops.
