Photo: PATRICK HAMILTON 73 artworks on display The public gets to become art award judges in this year s Impressions Art Awards at the Refi- nery Artspace in Nelson. While five awards have already been pres- ented, gallery visitors can decide whose work they like best, with votes taken until October 2. The Tony Allain artist People s Choice Award will give $250 to the winning artist and every voter is entered into a draw to win a $200 voucher redeemable for artwork pur- chased from the Icon Gallery, sponsored by artist Neville Parker. On show are 73 artworks selected from 170 entries in the national awards. Nelson artist Lee Woodman took out the Lisa Grennell Artist Award with a $250 prize for the best entry by an artist residing in the top of the South Island for his Meditation on Hundertwasser s ungodly straight line #2. Nelson College for Girls student Alice Reade, 15, won the Refinery Artspace Arts Student Award with her drawing Dear Deer of a fawn at her grandparents Christchurch farm. The award gives her a fully funded solo exhi- bition at the Refinery Artspace, along with mentoring assistance. The supreme award with a $2000 prize went to Karen Neal, of Marlborough, for her entry, Lace Moko III. Artist Melbourn , of Richmond, took out the Arts Council Nelson/Icon Gallery Award with a $500 prize for her work Facelift. Catherine Russ of Richmond won the Jill Vollmer Art Award and $250 for her work Queer Tasting Tea.
