Wheelers' summer season starts with a speedy blast The first race of the Tasman Wheelers' summer season was a fast blast around the Aldourie- Palmer Rd circuit in Waimea West. The strong contingent of junior riders in C and D grades were joined by entry grade newcomers. Geoff Gudsell has been busy organising a group of riders who are new to cycling or have not ridden for a while. The aim of the group is to make entry into cycling at a club level less daunting and less threatening. There will be training and instruction in bunch riding skills, including rotating in the bunch. The class also provides a start for those wishing to move up to the faster grades A to E. Fifteen people turned up for the first race, and they were pleased with their efforts and enjoyed the experience. They also had the experienced Dean Fulton and Geoff Gudsell helping them out. Anyone interested in joining this group or racing with a bunch of like-minded cyclists contact Geoff at firstname.lastname@example.org or tasmanwheelers.co.nz. Looking for another shot at the shield Touchdown: Tasman's Mitchell Scott scores a try against Otago on Friday. Photo: PHOTOSPORT. It's still early days in the ITM Cup competition but we're tracking pretty well. To be top of the championship after four rounds is pretty good. The boys are looking forward to another win this Friday to make it three wins in a row. That's something the Makos have never done before and it would be good to add to the milestones we've already rea- ched this season, such as beating Otago and beating Southland at home for the first time. We've missed out on one shot at the Ranfurly Shield but Tasman potentially still has a shot if Counties lose to Tara- naki and then Taranaki holds on to it against Hawke's Bay. All the teams will have their various scenarios worked out. The shield is a huge part of New Zea- land rugby and everyone still wants it. They're always great games. When the team is going well players get noticed more and it's great that there are a lot of players in the team who will be getting looked at by Super Rugby teams. At this time of the year they are filling their rosters so in some sense it is on players' minds but the guys are profes- sionals and they will stay focused on the job at hand. Over the years Tasman has had more and more Super Rugby players and part of the reason we're doing well this year is that we have a core group of guys with that experience who have stuck with Tas- man. We had a light run on the morning of Big Tuesday in preparation to getting in some contact in the afternoon. Against North Harbour it will be more of a mental challenge to not allow any complacency to creep in. North Harbour are at the bottom of the table and it would be easy to go up there and assume we'll get the win. But one of the great things about this competition, which has been shown again and again, is that if you don't turn up you're more than likely to get beaten. North Harbour has some classy backs. I don't know if [new All Black second five- eighth] Francis Saili will be playing on Friday night but we'll need to be on form and make sure we don't end up on the wrong end of a surprise result.
