At the money-handover were, from left, Arthur Bradbury (Nelson), Keryn Rowe (Richmond), Kevin Hill (Nelson), Hec Arbuthnott (Nelson, president), Alan Hinton (Richmond, president), Paula Muddle (Rescue Helicopter service, communication manager), Gavin Calder (Nelson)and Peter Glue (Richmond). By SARAH DUNN Rotary members see rescue chopper in action Members of the Nelson and Richmond Rotary clubs had a vivid demonstration of how their donation to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust was spent when helicopter staff had to rush straight from accepting a cheque to a serious car crash near Murchison recently. Eight people were left injured after a campervan and a light truck were involved in a head-on colli- sion. Minutes after staff from the trust finished a speech thanking the Nel- son and Richmond Rotary club for their generosity, an emergency call required the helicopter to be wheeled out and dispatched while the Rotary members watched from the hangar. Marketing and communications manager Paula Muddle said the incident was a good opportunity for the helicopter trust to demonstrate its value to the community, calling it well-timed . They were just having a speech, standing up on the platform and it was like Excuse me . About 100 Rotarians gathered at the trust s hangar in Tahunanui to present a cheque for $6200. They raised the funds by holding a quiz night in July. Ms Muddle said the trust currently did not have a naming rights sponsor, so it had a funding shortfall of between $400,000 and $500,000. The money would go into a gen- eral fund. Nelson Rotary member- ship and public relations director Derek Drysdale said the experience of watching the helicopter flying off to a job brought home the reality of what their donation was funding. It s quite exciting to see it going off, but then you realise Hey, some- body s in trouble and those guys really put their lives on the line. He said the club had decided to concentrate its funding efforts on two or three major causes this year rather than spreading its efforts across a number of smaller chari- ties.
