By NATALIE CYRA Getting in close and posing for a photo proves a laugh for a group of Nelson quilters known as the Undercover Girls. But they're used to it -- after starting the group in 1985 and meeting three times a month ever since, they've been having fun together for almost 28 years. The Undercover Girls are thrilled'' to have donated a quilt in support of Nelson's Special Olympics athletes going to the National Summer Games in December, says member Joyce Jones. We've put in well over 100 hours of hard work into this quilt, and so enjoyed it that we'd love to do it again. It was like a factory work- shop, with people cracking the whip while we were sewing,'' she says. Group members come and go, but there are around 18 to 20 constant quilters, many of whom helped work on the piece that will be auctioned off towards the Olympians' trip. The quilt is made out of a typical Japanese Bento Box pattern, measuring around 9m onthetopand7orsoonthe back,'' Joyce says. We did that to try and appeal to the largest number of people that might be bidding at auction, because we wanted to make a quilt that would suit men and women.'' The group would like to thank Bronwyn Hamilton for finishing the quilt free of charge, as part of her contribution to the cause. Joyce says the entire process, including designing and collecting the fabrics until the final product was made, took around four months. It challenges you both on a mathematical basis, and on a creative basis,'' she says. It's a passion, and it keeps you out of mischief because there are so many challenges. Every quilt has a different challenge. You never can take it easy.'' The auction will be held at the Trafalgar Park Pavilion, September 13 at 5.30pm.
