Award-winning writer Lloyd Jones heads the impressive lineup of authors booked for this year s event -- a series of talks and panel discussions -- which is staged annually as part of the Nelson Arts Festival. Programme co-ordinator Jacquetta Bell said she was thrilled to have Jones on the programme, particularly because his memoir A History of Silence would be newly publi- shed. A History of Silence was spar- ked by the Christchurch earth- quakes, and is about the fault lines that opened up in Jones understanding of his own family history when he started search- ing for truth about his parents and grandparents, she said. Jones first collection of short stories was published in 1991. His bestselling novel Mister Pip has won several prizes and awards and was also shortlisted for the 2007 Man Booker Prize. Jacquetta said the festival this year would have a second memoir on the programme with Self Portrait by renowned pho- tographer Marti Friedlander. Jacquetta said Self Portrait told Marti s own story from her younger years in a London orphanage, through to marrying a Kiwi and moving to New Zea- land. Fiction writing would be rep- resented by New Zealand auth- ors Emily Perkins, Kate De Goldi, young adult writer Karen Healey and the festival s first international guest, Australian screenwriter-turned-novelist Graeme Simsion. The environment gets a work- out from Sir Alan Mark and Jim Salinger. Rosemary McLeod examines sewing and social change. There is a new Craig Potton Publishing book on 25 years of WearableArt, and Matt Lawrey chairs two dynamic thinking brunches. The 14 sessions wrap up with poets, Jessica Le Bas and poetry with Bill Manhire on the lawn at Woollaston Estates. Nelson city councillor Gail Collingwood said she was excited about the eclectic lineup of the Readers & Writers pro- gramme. This is a real opportunity for people who love books to come out to events where they can hear some of the wonderful writers that we have in New Zealand today, she said. She said a first for this year was the writers workshops, which had been added due to popular request. There are two sessions, from Kate De Goldi and Graeme Simsion. Gail said Nelson was lucky that book store Page and Black- mores had made a long-term commitment to sponsoring this event. The 14 Page & Blackmore Readers and Writers sessions are clustered in the three weekends of the festival. The Nelson Arts Festival is presented by the Nelson City Council, and runs from October 11 to October 28. It was launched at an event last Friday. Programmes are now available.
