By SALLY KIDSON Students taking part in the Victory Boxing programme love their new gym. More than 80 children now take part in the afterschool scheme which aims to boost self-esteem, teach discipline and steer them towards a positive future. About a quarter of the children taking part are girls who also got to see their new gym for the first time last week. Carlina Tui, Cumorah Aiolupotea and Reann Elkington took part in the pro- gramme last year. The programme had been based at the YMCA at Victory Square, but is now based in a new build- ing on Vanguard St donated by the Gib- bons family. The girls told The Leader the new gym was much nicer than their old one. Carlina said the new area was pretty awesome and she liked all the new gear. She came to Victory Boxing because she wanted to get fit . Cumorah said she liked the new sing- lets and gear. The fitness programme was fun. Reanne also said the new gym was awesome. She loved the programme as she got fit and it keeps me out of trouble and it s fun . Starting with 20 children two years ago at the Victory YMCA Boxing Gym, Paul Hampton, the Victory Boxing programme director, said the programme had quickly grown. His phone was now constantly ringing from people wanting to support the programme or enrol their children. Paul said he had already been approached by a number of people, par- ticularly women, who wanted to take part in next year s Fight For Victory. The boys and girls between 7 and 13 years-of-age are learning from former New Zealand boxing champions Barry Galbraith and Dean Rackley. Students are charged $5 to join and it is free after that. They start the afternoon with fresh fruit and water and then hit the gym. In the gym they do fitness drills, shadow boxing and some bag work. Paul said the children got fit, learnt discipline and the programme had bene- fits in home and school life. They also developed self-confidence and listening skills. A lot is around building self-esteem. One of his favourite moments last year was seeing a girl who had previously been really reluctant to exercise complete her first push-up. The look on her face was brilliant. The new gym was made possible by the efforts of those involved with the success- ful Fight for Victory charity boxing event, held on June 1 at the Trafalgar Centre. The Gibbons Group has provided the use of the old building free of charge for an extended period. The old workshop has had extensive work on it to turn it into a gym. Paul said the boys were equally as happy as the girls with the new set-up. Volunteers Susan Richards and Sharon Tarapipipi said the pro- gramme for girls was fantastic. Susan, who also teaches at Victory Pri- mary where many of the students come from, said the girls just bubbled when they were at the programme and even though it was hard work there was no moaning. I think it gives the girls an oppor- tunity to do well with girls around them.
