Shuttersport photographer Chris Symes captured a Rippa Rugby coach doing just that when briefing his team during its game at Motueka's Sports Park on Saturday. Photo: COLIN SMITH Nelson BMX rider Logan Clarke got to ride against some of the world s best making it through to the quarter finals of the UCI BMX World Championships in Auckland. Logan was one of five Nelson riders who headed north to com- pete in the recent world champs. He was the best of the five and the only one to make it through to the quarter finals. Logan told the Nelson Leader it had been a fun experience to ride at world level. He said he had 21G2 hours to practice on the track before race day. I was happy on how I was riding. On race day he got to the track at 6.45am to warm up. My first three races went well. He got two third places and a fourth which put him through to the quarter finals. In the quarter final I got pushed high on the first turn and came fifth, but I had to get fourth in that race [to prog- ress further], he said. Logan said he raced the Aust- ralian riders his age who were first, second and third and the World number two so it was a hard race . But I felt pleased with my effort because I gave it my all. My aim is to train hard and make the semis next year. The best thing of the worlds was get- ting to race and watch the pros. Logan has international experience, representing the New Zealand Mighty 11s team that contested the trans- Tasman series with Australia last year. Tasman Wakelin, Nash Thornley, Brady Taylor- Jones and Glen Ogle, of Nelson, also travelled to Auckland for the competition. The Nelson BMX club have had a "heartbreaking" year, after an arson attack in January burned down their two-storey viewing platform and storage shed in Tahunanui. The fire destroyed all their maintenance equipment, tro- phies and historical records and then motorcyclists ripped up the track.
