By ALASTAIR PAULIN Was it premature celebrat- ing that spoiled the Sirens of Smash's chances of knocking off Welling- ton during their roller derby match of big hits and nimble jam- mers? That was certainly the way it looked to super fan Aaron Mr Credit Crunch'' Drummond at the Tahunanui Skating Rink last Saturday night. Sirens spokeswoman Tara Forde was too busy blocking Ric- hter City Convicts skaters to make the connection but when Aaron pointed out after the bout that Nelson held the lead until some of the Sirens started dancing trackside just before halftime, the theory struck her as plausible. The Sirens were taking on the Convicts, the B team from the country's strongest roller derby squad, Wellington's Richter City. The Sirens got out to an early lead thanks to some well-strategised moves that saw their jammers racking up the points but then they wised up to our starts'', Tara said. The match was very physical with lots of big hits, making it entertaining to watch but tough to play, she said. In the second half, I think we lost our focus a bit and we made more mistakes. We had a lot of people sent off [for illegal blocks] and that's a real disadvantage. They put big points on the board when our jammers got sent off, giving them a power jam.'' She was still pleased with a strong showing from the Sirens, who eventually lost 228-146. The Sirens MVP, as voted by the Convicts, was jammer Cherie Credit Crunch'' Drummond. Tara said that Fay Precious'' McKenzie, usually a jammer, made some great blocks, and that it was great to see Jodie Tank'' Reed, a relative newcomer to the squad, step up and make some powerful hits. Tara said the Sirens wanted to thank the 300-strong crowd who came out to support them. The Sirens are looking for spon- sors to help them get to the natio- nals in Palmerston North at Labour Weekend.
