Photo: SALLY KIDSON Photographer earns international qualification By SALLY KIDSON Nelson wildlife photo- grapher Rebecca Bowater has had her work recog- nised internationally. The Atawhai resident had her photographic skills recognised last week when she joined a select group of New Zealand photo- graphers who had earned the letters AFIAP after their name due to their international success. The letters mean Artiste Federation Internationale de L Art Photographique. They are awarded by the The Federation International de L Art Photographique (FIAP) -- an umbrella organisation for recreational photography across the world. AFIAP is the first distinction FIAP award. To qualify, Rebecca was required to have had success in Salons conducted under FIAP patronage and needed to have at least 30 acceptances at a minimum of 10 different salons, across a minimum of five different countries and with at least 10 different images. She did this by submitting her photos to FIAP salons in countries as varied as Slovenia, England, Austria, Malaysia, Serbia, Indonesia and Australia over the past 18 months. Rebecca has been taking photographs for years and had an interest in alpine plants and fungi. However a cancer diagnosis five years ago started her fascination with bird photography. As someone who had previously loved tramping, and had a fond- ness of capturing New Zealand s unique fungi, she was forced to look for subjects closer to home and found her garden and nearby Nelson Haven a great place to capture native birds. Photos she has taken of birds around the Nelson region now grace the new information panels designed by artist Janet Bathgate on the Tasman Great Taste Trail. Rebecca will be showing her photos from her trip to Alaska on Saturday, August 17 at Atawhai Community Church. The fundraiser for St Andrews School in Uganda starts at 7.30pm. Entry is $8.
