When the Richmond Rabbits trounced the Phoenix Vikings 74-4 last Saturday, Shuttersport photographer Barry Whitnall had plenty of chances to freeze those emotions in a frame with the Rabbits crossing the try line 15 times. For more of Barry's typically crisp and telling images, as well as plenty of coverage of other weekend sport, see shuttersport.co.nz IN BRIEF Triathlon offers course options The first race in the Nelson Triathlon Club's Shoe Clinic duathlon series is scheduled at 10am this Sunday on Rabbit Island. Competitors have the option of a long course event with a 2.5km run, 17km bike ride and 5km run, or a short course 2.5km run, 8.5km cycle, 2.5km run event. Recent rain closed the island's beach reserve this week and a decision will be made about possible postponement shortly. For updates go to mountainbikeduathlon.co.nz Branford Trots this weekend The annual cross country meet, the Branford Trots, is being organised by Athletics Nelson, from 2.30pm this Saturday. The race is based at Branford Park at the bottom of the Maitai Valley. Marathon achievement under way Plugging away: St Paul's year 8 students Kate McCashin, left, and Sam Ashley who have been taking part in the eight-week Rod Dixon Kids Marathon programme. By PHIL BARNES Up to 460 children will add to the atmosphere of the Nelson Half Mara- thon on May 5 by com- pleting their own marathon at Saxton Stadium at the same time. Children from five schools have been taking part in the eight-week Rod Dixon Kids Marathon run- ning programme to accumulate the overall marathon distance of 42.2km over that time. They run the last 1.3km of their marathons during the Nelson Half Marathon and finish on the ath- letics track at Saxton Stadium. Rod, a former Nelsonian and Olympic 1500m bronze medal and New York marathon winner, who is now based in the United States, will return to Nelson to present medals to all finishers. Co-ordinator Debbie Lautens- lager said she had approached Henley, St Paul's, Clifton Terrace, Hampden Street and Waimea Intermediate schools about taking part in the programme. She said she selected just five schools this year because she was trialling the programme but there was poten- tial to involve more schools in future. Debbie said it was the pro- gramme's first time in Nelson. The children started about eight weeks ago and have been given a training log which also covers other issues such as nutrition,'' she said. But this is only a guide. They can do more or less running each day than what is suggested.'' She said Rod introduced the programme several years ago in the United States and it has since won a presidential award. Rod particularly wanted to tar- get obesity in America but that is not so much of an issue in Nelson as we are pretty active. But the main idea is to keep school kids active and moving.'' The programme is now in major cities world-wide with the final run held at prominent events such as the Los Angeles marathon. Debbie said another 200 chil- dren were expected to finish the programme next term because they did not have time to complete it before the half marathon because of other school commit- ments.
