Hangi to help fund sandpit Struggling to find space: From front left, Ciara Davis, Milzen Ward, Macey Richards, Luca Elliot and Harrison Bartholomew at Stoke Playcentre's inadequate sandpit. Photo: PHIL BARNES Stoke Playcentre is organis- ing a hangi this Saturday to raise funds for a much- needed sandpit. The playcentre has been open just 18 months and can accommo- date up to 30 children a session but it has only a small sandpit which can barely fit five or six children. Supervisor Marie Lenihan said the centre held a hangi last year which paid for equipment purchases and planning for future development. This year the centre wanted to focus on getting a new sandpit, Marie said. Because we have a large com- munity from the Pacific Islands in Stoke, we would like to get one with a Pacifika theme.'' She said one idea was to have something built in the form of a fale (traditional thatched hut). The hangi starts at 5.30pm. Tickets are $10 and Marie said there would be cultural and vegetarian options with the food.
