Aheavy afternoon down- pour failed to deter a large turnout of pupils, their families and school staff who celebrated the official opening of Hira School's new swimming pool with a hangi last Saturday. Transition support mana- ger Chris Keeler said the school's original pool had been a wonderful community asset but it was built more than 50 years ago and had severe cracks and constant leaks which meant it could no longer be used. Living rurally, it is more of a challenge for school families and the wider community to access private swimming tuition in Nelson and, with no success received from funding applications, it was disap- pointing to think that the school would no longer have a pool for the children and wider community to use.'' But Chris said Nigel Hunter, who has three child- ren attending Hira School and is a former student, offered to help fix the issues. Nigel is the owner of Nelson busi- ness Mayfair Pools and he kindly donated a great portion of his services, equipment and time over the Christmas holidays. Then at the beginning of this year the Hira School pool was re-opened to the delight of all the children and the wider community. It has once again been well used and well loved over the glorious, long hot Nelson sum- mer and this would not have been possible without Nigel.'' Chris said to celebrate this occasion, two other parents, Butch Little and Maria Pileff, offered to prepare and cook a hangi. The event was originally to have been held last month but was cancelled due to fire risk. Chris said the school prided itself on its close relationship with the community and the hangi was another lovely evening to remember. The children sung waiata and led the karakia. Then everyone was able to try out the kai. It was delicious. The large crowd had plenty to eat and the atmosphere was warm and inviting even if the weather outside was not.''
