Michael Croxford, team captain Junior orienteers from the Nelson- Tasman region juniors claimed four tit- les at the national champs held in Can- terbury earlier this month. Anya Murray of Golden Bay, Riley Crox- ford of Tasman and Johanna Harrison of Mapua all won titles in the boys' and girls' 10-and-under age category, while Sally Mains of Nelson won a title in the girls' 12-and-under category. Anya, 7, won her sprint race at Ferrymead Historic Park competing against other com- petitors up to three years older. The course was particularly challenging given that runners had to navigate through and around a mini-golf course, a paint ball park and past trams. Riley, 7, and Johanna, 9, both won their long-distance races set in forested hills near Springfield. Riley earned his win by finishing just one second ahead of Oliver Edwards of Wellington, who had won the grade over the previous two days. Johanna finished by more than a minute ahead of her nearest competi- tors. This year saw the biggest ever team from the Nelson Orienteering Club head to the national champs. Competition was held in four different disciplines: the sprint at Ferrymead on Good Friday, intri- cate sand dune forest for the middle dis- tance at Woodend Beach on Saturday, forested foothills for the long distance on Easter Sunday and relays in the rocks of Castle Hill on Monday. Team captain Michael Croxford said it was fantastic to see so many from the club come to experience the vibe of nationals''. The four different disciplines were held in four quite unique terrains and tested a range of skills, speed and endurance so it was excellent to see so many Nelson club members doing so well,'' Michael said. The club is very proud of our juniors' achievements especially given the level of competition at this year's nationals.'' Other age-grade winners include Nelson's Mike Wimpenny (M65 sprint), Michael Crox- ford of Tasman (M35 middle), Ian Holden of Nelson (M80 middle and long) and Sally Lat- timore of Tasman (W21AS long). All of the juniors are now looking forward to the South Island schools champs to be hosted by the Nelson club at Saxton Field and Rabbit Island on May 3 and 4. Details are on the club's website: noc.org.nz. The second place getters were: Riley Crox- ford M10 (sprint), Mike Wimpenny M65A (long), Tom Clendon M75A (sprint middle and long), Sally Mains W12A (sprint), Ireland Steenbergen W16B (middle), Shane Harrison M40AS (long). The third place getters were: Michael Croxford M35 (sprint), Neil Murray M40A (middle), Shane Harrison M40AS (middle), Sally Lattimore W35A (middle), Heather Clendon W75A (middle), Jamal Murray M12A (long), Jill Clendon W40A (long).
