Photo: PHIL BARNES By PHIL BARNES Nelson BMX Club members Glen Ogle and Tasman Wakelin have finished second in their respect- ive age groups in the BMX nationals held in Cambridge last week. Glen was competing in the 30-years-plus masters section, and Tasman was competing in the 11-year-boy category, in which there were more than 50 competitors. Corey Stafford, originally from Nelson but now living in Australia, won the 30-plus grade. Glen said he won all six quali- fying races prior to the final but then came up against Corey and knew he would have his work cut out to beat him, as Corey is a coach and manager for the BMX DK team in Australia and spends much of his life racing. Competitors had to race over just one lap of the 380-metre course at the nationals, and Glen completed this in 38 seconds. He said the course was quite a challenge''. The starting hill involves a drop of 6.5 metres, which is the second biggest in the country.'' In other results Nelson's Logan Clarke finished fifth in the 12-year-old boys' category. Nelson club members Rani Bear, Nash Thornley, Sally Davies and Jack Rawson also qualified for the world cham- pionships, and Brady Jones will enter as a wild card in the cruiser class. Club member Rebecca Clarke said the nationals usually rep- resented the end of the BMX season, but this year was different as the world champion- ships will be held at Auckland's Vector Arena in July. She said club members who had qualified would now be training hard for the event.
