14 THE NELSON LEADER, MARCH 28, 2013 NEWS Get it when YOU want it ...and more NEW Easy to read format Check out www.nelsonmail.co.nz/digital-editions Hall hosts miniature craft workshop Small world: 21 miniaturists gathered for a workshop with Rik Pierce of California, to create a 1/12th scale miniature of Fair Rosamond's bower at the Redwoods Valley Hall on Saturday. Photo: MARION VAN DIJK Californian Rik Pierce travels the globe helping others create their own miniature world. He has just spent five days run- ning a workshop at the Redwood Valley Hall for 21 miniaturists, half of them from Australia. He showed them how to con- struct a one-twelfth scale of a folly, based on the story of Fair Rosa- mond who was the mistress of King Henry II. Members of the Nelson Miniatures Club hope to finish theirs in time for their next show at the Stoke Hall on July 20 and 21, and to show them off at the National Miniatures Convention which they will host at Labour Weekend next year. It is the second workshop Rik has run in New Zealand but it will be the last. At 72, he has decided to take it a little easier, although he has workshops in Dallas, San Jose and Philadelphia this year. He said it was a little-known hobby and most people did not realise its extent. In the United States it's a billion-dollar industry which peo- ple can make a living out of.'' The appeal is its escapism. The world we live in is not ideal so you can create your own reality, in miniature.''
