PHOTO: MATT LAWREY Tapa cloth transformed By MATT LAWREY T hings with Wings is the name of the crafty exhibition by Nelson artist Deborah Walsh on at Fibre Spectrum in Trafalgar St until March 31. Deborah has made most of the show’s characters, which include moths, birds and a bat, with Pacific Island tapa cloth. The tapa were given to her by fans of her work and Deborah said she was careful how she used them. ‘‘They’re the kind of thing you can’t throw away and people know that if they give them to me, I’ll make some- thing gorgeous with them,’’ she said. ‘‘That first incision with the scis- sors is a little sacred. I suppose you have to be respectful. You have to know what you’ll do with it and that you’ll give it another life.’’ Deborah describes her artwork as ‘‘drawing in 3D’’ and said anyone who would like to do a workshop in her studio should call her on 021 113 9156.
