Photo: PHIL BARNES Art inspiration comes from home, family By PHIL BARNES Artist Amaryllis Jackson’s love for the Nelson landscapes where she grew up is reflect- ed in her latest exhibition which opens on March 25 at Gallery 203 in Trafalgar St. Called Home Lands, it features abstract landscape paintings using acrylic on canvas. ‘‘I have a strong rapport with Nel- son and a passionate relationship with the landscape and that reflects in my work,’’ she said. ‘‘And these paintings are in relation to the lands around me – especially around the Glen area, with the beach and Cable Bay Walk- way where I grew up. The paintings are an expression of what I see and feel.’’ She said she had owned horses all her life and these also featured prominently in her work. Amaryllis has built her own studio in Nelson having moved into twon from Wakapuaka with her French- born photographer husband Morgan Hunon. The couple have three children, aged 6 months, 4 and 6, which meant she was often painting until 2am in order to get her projects completed, she said. ‘‘But the children give me a strong drive and are an inspiration with their wonderful imagination.’’ Amaryllis held her first solo exhi- bition in 2007 and since then has continued to exhibit both on her own and with Morgan. The couple visited France in 2008 and it was an inspiration to see the big European galleries, she said. ‘‘I did a small amount of art over there and I was then able to sell some of my work in a gallery in Nor- mandy.’’ Amaryllis said one of her greatest influences as an artist had been her grandmother Emily Jackson who was a prolific and powerful painter in impressionistic landscape. Her parents are Nelson musicians Miles and Margaret Jackson who perform as Duo Jackson. Amaryllis said the influence of their music had ‘‘definitely run a strong thread through my paint- ings’’. ‘‘I spent a lot of time travelling around with them on their tours and it was an exciting time. I was fortu- nate to be surrounded by so many interesting and creatively dynamic people. ‘‘I am sure this has given me a different outlook on life and has had a profound influence on my own art.’’ The exhibition runs for three weeks.
