Photo: PATRICK HAMILTON By SARAH DUNNE The former lead singer of Nelson band The Peasants, Georgia Nott, is a finalist in a songwriting com- petition that has attracted entries from all over the world. Georgia, 18, entered four songs in the International Songwriting Competition's teen section in the middle of last year and one of them, Golden Girl, has been named a finalist. The track was recorded in Georgia's bedroom. I think I'm the only one in the finals that hasn't got a pro- fessional recording,'' she said. I do demos in my room all the time so I just thought Well, why not?' and sent some through.'' She found out Golden Girl was one of 15 songs chosen as a finalist from her mother last week, who called during an orientation week tour of the University of Auckland. Because I was on the tour I didn't have any of my friends around to tell at first,'' Georgia said. I was just excited by myself.'' Georgia is enrolled in a Bach- elor of Music majoring in pop. Former bandmates Joseph Corban-Banks, Chris Phillips and her brother Caleb are all studying nearby, although Geor- gia thought she was the only one focusing on performing. If Golden Girl wins first prize, Georgia will receive a scholar- ship for a five-week programme at Berklee College of Music in Boston, United States. The songwriting competition is judged by a panel of industry leaders and artists that includes Tom Waits and Janelle Monae. Georgia's song Better was also a finalist in the 2012 Lion Foun- dation Songwriting Compe- tition.
