Photo: SIMON BLOOMBERG Karate club kicks out in nature's own classroom By SIMON BLOOMBERG When most people go to Rabbit Island they pack their Speedos and picnic baskets to enjoy a swim and barbecue at the beach. But last Sunday a dedicated group of 104 athletes from around the Nelson-Tasman region packed their gear and headed to Rabbit Island for the annual Nelson Seido kar- ate beach training day. Hanshi Andy Barber star- ted the event after setting up a Seido Karate dojo in Nelson in 1974. He said the beach training had become a regular fixture on the karate calendar apart from one year when nature intervened. It has been a wonderful tradition at a wonderful venue. It's a fun day and gives all our students of all ages and grades the chance to train together. We get the kids along and they have a bit of fun and we always seem to get good weather. We only had to call it off once, two years ago when there was a tsunami warning and we couldn't go [to the] beach.'' Andy said the beach train- ing day was also an oppor- tunity for students to go back to karate's roots because his- torically, karate was often taught outdoors. The beach training added another dimension with students having to contend with water, waves and shift- ing sands. It's very different from working on a smooth floor in the dojo.'' Students and instructors from Nelson, Stoke, Rich- mond, Motueka and Blenheim took part. There were more than 200 Seido Karate students in the region, with 100 children attending classes in the Nel- son dojo which celebrates its 40th anniversary in Novem- ber next year.
