Bank walk on again Unique walk: Wendy Banta, left, and Rene Van Der Sant, both of Nelson, during the 2011 Rotary Club of Nelson West-sponsored Boulder Bank Walk. One of Nelson s icons will be opened for public access on Sunday, March 17 for the fourth consecutive year when the Rotary Club of Nelson West and Nelson Coastguard will provide transport for a walk along the Boulder Bank. Dick Carter, who is projects co- ordinator for the Rotary Club, said the fundraising walk was 8 kilometres long and could be expected to take up to three hours. The lighthouse would be accessible and other features would be described in a printed programme. Speakers at the lighthouse will include Brian Kidson, a descend- ant of John Kidson, who was lighthouse keeper from 1865 until 1892, and Hilary and John Mitchell, local historians and researchers into iwi issues. Dick said the walk was testing, with a lot of boulder hopping, so good footwear was essential. Par- ticipants would also need to be prepared to get their feet wet as they boarded the boat for the return. Debris can be collected by walkers and left at pick-up points to help preserve the uniqueness of this special treasure right on Nelson s doorstep, he said. Buses will depart from Wake- field Quay adjacent to the Sea Rescue Building and the Coast- guard Berth between 8.15am and 10.30 am to drop off walk partici- pants at Boulder Bank Dr. Boats will be provided to return people back to Wakefield Quay from the city end of the Boulder Bank. The last boat will depart the Boulder Bank at 3pm. For those travelling both ways by boat, departure times from Wakefield Quay are 11.30am and 1pm. This option involves a short walk to the lighthouse. Proceeds will benefit Coast- guard, who are fundraising for a new rescue boat, and other Rotary Foundation charities. Sponsors this year include the TSB Bank, Knapps Lawyers, and First National Real Estate. Drinks and some food will be available for sale. Tickets cost $20 and $25 per head, and have sold out early some years, so book early. Early ticket buyers will be allocated to the double-decker bus. Tickets are on sale now at TSB Bank, corner of Trafalgar St and Bridge St, and and Land in Tahuna, Stoke Garden and Land- scapes in Saxton Rd, and First National Real Estate on Queen St in Richmond. In the event of rough weather the event will be rescheduled to Sunday, March 24, and tickets purchased will be transferred to that date.
