Photo: MATT LAWREY Chance to dance to a new groove By MATT LAWREY Annika Wagenhoff is a great example of Nelson s growing cultural diversity. Annika, who is German and works as a fresh water ecologist at the Cawthron Institute, is a massive fan of West African dance. So great is her love for the dance form she has just spent a month studying it in Guinea. It was a dance intensive, cultural immersion workshop, she said. Annika, who first discovered West African dance while studying at Otago University, was based in the capital Conakry but did see some other parts of the country. We did travel outside the city to villages as well as a beautiful trop- ical beach, she said. It was amazing. The dancing, the people . . . It s one of the poorest countries in the world but it s friendly and when people are danc- ing they re happy. Annika is running a six-week course at the Victory Community Centre starting on February 21 to share with others what she has learnt. The course is for people aged 18 and over, sessions run from 6pm to 7.15pm, and the cost is $36. No previous experience or shoes are necessary. Annika said West African dance is a great way to get fit and socialise. For more on the course and the rest of the Victory on the Move programme, pick up an enrolment form from the centre or call 03 546 8389.
