Four-hour challenge helps a good cause Big workout: MiGym instructor Lynley Coventry, left, will supervise the first hour of the four-hour spin challenge. Photo: PHIL BARNES Nelson gym MiGym and the Heart Foundation are inviting workmates, families, friends or neighbours to team up for the four-hour team bicycle spin chal- lenge on Friday, February 15. Nelson Heart Foundation rep- resentative Averil West said physical activity was one of the keys to a healthy heart and the event, which will run from 4pm until 8pm, would raise funds to help support the programmes and projects of the Heart Foun- dation in the Nelson-Tasman region. One project is a DVD, being produced locally, to provide sup- port to Nelson residents who have suffered heart problems. MiGym on Bridge St will host the challenge in its new spin room and provide five instruc- tors to lead from the front. MiGym co-owner Rachel Voyce said it was the second year it had hosted the spin challenge. We think it s such a good cause to be supporting. And when we can combine it with something that gets people fit and healthy at the same time then it all fits together. Rachel said every team which enters pays an entry fee which goes to the Heart Foundation and each team is then assigned one of the 26 bikes in the spin room. Each team is then respon- sible to keep their bike spinning for the four hours. They get fined $1 for each minute their bike is not spinning, she said. Already a number of work- places have reserved their bike, including Nelson Events, NBS, Telfer Young, Zindels, Duncan Cotterill, Cawthron Institute and Talleys. Most teams will have four or eight members but Telfer Young is going one better. Ashley Ste- vens has taken up the challenge to go solo while his workmates form another team. Greg Dykzeul, the skipper of the NBS team, said the organis- ation would use the challenge as a team-building exercise. Our team members have varying levels of fitness and some haven t cycled for a long time so we ll be working together to ensure the team comes through. Averil said anyone unable to create a team should contact her at the Heart Foundation. She may be able to help by putting individuals together. Visit migym.co.nz or call the Heart Foundation on 03 545 7112 for registration and more information.
