42 THE NELSON LEADER, MARCH 19, 2015 NEWS Dad takes on Mt Everest-sized task Nelson cyclist Martin Nichol is attempting to cycle the equivalent height of Mt Everest in one day to raise money for Atawhai Girl Guides and Brownies which his daughters attend. Martin will attempt the extreme one day ‘‘Everesting’’ cycling challenging by riding up and down Atawhai’s Bayview Rd an estimated 132 times. He says the challenge consists climbing and descending a designated hill until you’ve ascended the equivalent height – 8,848 metres – of Everest from sea level. Martin says a typical tough hill ride for a fit cyclist might have 2500 metres of climbing, so Everesting in a day was ‘‘no mean feat’’. The ride takes 12 to 24 hours to complete. Rest stops are allowed but sleep is not, so sleep deprivation was a major factor. Martin starts his ride today between 4pm and 5pm and aims to finish around 2pm on Friday.
