24 THE NELSON LEADER, MARCH 12, 2015 Buddhist relics to be shown will be on public show in Nelson this weekend. Nelson MP Nick Smith will welcome the A relics at an opening ceremony which will include chanting with Buddhist Masters. The relics are part of the Maitreya Loving Kindness Relic Tour and have been touring the world since 2001 visiting 68 countries. After touring the relics will be stored inside a 159 metre high statue of Maitreya – the Buddha of Love, which is under construction in Kushinagar, India. The free event is hosted by Chandrakirti Meditation Centre, the Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Centre in Upper Moutere. ❚ The exhibition will be held at Club Italia in Trafalgar St, with public viewing from 10am till 7pm on Saturday and until 5pm on Sunday, with a public talk each day at 2pm. rare exhibition of ancient and sacred relics from the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and other Buddhist Masters NEWS Encounter with world’s rarest kiwi An open day at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary next weekend is giving people the chance to see a live kiwi. The kiwi encounter is with New Zealand’s rarest kiwi, the rowi. General manager Hudson Dodd says the open days were a great way for locals and visitors to see what’s been happening at the sanctuary. ‘‘After all the fundraising and the hard work it’s great to see the construction of the pest-proof fence happening. ‘‘Our volunteers are also doing a fantastic job building a track system through the Sanctuary,’’ he says. At the open day, which runs from 11am to 4pm, there will be interpretive walks on this network of tracks.
