6 THE NELSON LEADER, FEBRUARY 26, 2015 NEWS Huge boost as performer flies out S inger Natalie Davies, 19, is heading to London for the start of musical theatre career, thrilled with a last-minute funding boost. A fundraising concert at Nelson’s Theatre Royal on Saturday raised just over $4000, another $1000 was given in donations and a raffle raised $150. The idea for the concert came from Hugh Neill, who was master of ceremonies on the night. Nelson’s performing arts community came together to join Davies in putting on the two-hour concert, including the senior class from Off Broadway, tappers from Soundstage, a Nelson College theatresports team and a host of singers and dancers. ‘‘I am extremely grateful,’’ said Davies, who was flying out today. She has auditions at the Arts Educational Schools, London Guildford School of Acting and Mountview Academy next month, and will use the money raised for school fees. Davies came to New Zealand from England with her family when she was 10 and she caught the musical theatre bug after her first role in the Nelson Youth Theatre production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
